Merchant Princes

John Francis Maguire

John Francis Maguire (1815-1872) photographed when mayor of Cork, a position he held in 1852 and from 1862 to 1864. He was the son of a merchant and became closely involved in politics, serving as Member of Parliament between 1852 and 1872. He was active in local and Roman Catholic affairs. Maguire is perhaps best known as the founder of the Cork Examiner newspaper in 1841, a publication (now known as the Irish Examiner) that is still in existence.
